A year in Freistadt: pancakes when the sap runs, a parade on the Fourth, sundaes in August, sauerbraten in March, and history come to life in between. Listed here in the order they come around, with this year's 250th anniversary specials marked.

  1. A one-time 250th anniversary afternoon

    Fun Afternoon in Freistadt

    An afternoon of old-fashioned games and contests — beards, pie baking, Hammerschlagen, a scavenger hunt, and a 50-50 raffle — with every historic building open to tour.

  2. A 250th anniversary evening program

    “Abigail Adams”

    A living-history evening with Abigail Adams — the revolution, the letters, and the early days of an unfinished Washington, D.C. Free to attend.

  3. Late winter, in maple-sap season (February or March)

    Pancake Breakfast

    All-you-can-eat pancakes when the maple sap starts to run — proceeds help build the Exhibition Barn.

  4. A Saturday or Sunday in March

    German Dinner & Entertainment

    Sauerbraten, kassler rippchen, German beer and live entertainment — an annual fundraising feast running since about 2010.

  5. Every July 4

    Freistadt 4th of July

    A patriotic church service, a small-town parade, the Alte Kameraden Band, and a full day of living history — a Freistadt tradition since 1845.

  6. The third Sunday in August

    Ice Cream Social

    Sundaes, picnic food, and the historic buildings open to wander — a relaxed August afternoon on the grounds.

  7. Evenings through the year, often fall and winter

    Special Programs

    Living-history evenings and presentations — meet Helen Keller, Katharine Wright, Martin Luther, and the settlers' own Heinrich von Rohr.
