Ice Cream Social
Sundaes, picnic food, and the historic buildings open to wander — a relaxed August afternoon on the grounds.
Every year on the third Sunday in August, the society opens the historic grounds for a leisurely afternoon built around one essential ingredient: ice cream sundaes.
Come hungry — hamburgers, hot dogs, and pulled pork sandwiches are available to purchase, or bring your own picnic lunch and claim a table under the picnic shelter. Then dig into a sundae.
A quieter way to see the village
The Ice Cream Social is the best time to explore the historic buildings with less traffic than the Fourth of July. The buildings are open, the blacksmith often has the forge going, and there is time to linger over the exhibits, chat with society members, and try the occasional scavenger hunt.
Car shows and surprises
Some years bring a bonus: the Ice Cream Social has hosted classic car, truck, and tractor shows over the years — a Model T club in 2018, a Corvette show in 2019, and vintage vehicle shows going back to 2014 where visitors voted for their favorites.
Raffle drawings for the society’s fundraisers — most recently benefiting the Exhibition Barn building fund — are often held mid-afternoon at the social.
